Jahrhunderts – und in der Geschichte der Graphik überhaupt.
So wie Rembrandt in ‚Die drei Kreuze’ von eine unheimlich plastische Qualität erzeugt, wo die Lichtregie das ganze Geschehnis dominiert und das Graphische quickly ganz im Malerischen verschwinden lässt, so sieht guy wie er der ‚Ecce Homo’ mit stramme Risse, ungefüllte Flächen und schwarze Löcher darstellt, wie er den Raum quick wie ein Theaterdekor gestaltet, wo verschiedene Kulisseelemente einander überlappen. Rembrandt scheint sich in diese beide Stiche zwei ganz verschiedene technisch-stilistische Herausforderungen zu beauftragen, die er beide mit große Meisterschaft und plastische Virtuosität bis zum ende durchführt. Seine graphische Experimente, die die Grenze des Mediums ständig abtasten, erreichen damit ein absoluter Höhepunkt.
Rembrandt geht aber noch weiter. Sowohl die Platte des ‚die drei Kreuze’ als des ‚Ecce Homo’ nimmt er nach eine Weile wieder auf, um sie beiden radikal um zu gestalten. Der Grund dafür ist kaum Nachzuvollziehen. ‚Die drei Kreuze’ wird dramatisch komplett umorganisiert, Figuren werden weggelassen und hinzugefügt, und das ganze Bild wird durch lange dramatische Schraffuren durchzogen, so dass alles verblasst hinter dunkle Nebelschichten. Auch in ‚Ecce Homo’ verschwindet ab der V. Zustand die ganze Menge Leuten die sich auf dem Vordergrund befindet, und wird ersetzt durch zwei tiefschwarze Kerkerlöcher.
